In autumn 2016, we were approached by UNEP/UN Environment (in the framework of their Carpathian Convention) for suggestions on how to develop a “soft tourism” industry in this wild region and position it as a role model for other regions worldwide. We soon came up with an answer and presented our idea of a cycling route through the entire Carpathian Region – for mountain bikers and trekking cyclists. We called it “Cycling the Great Carpathians”.
